Cabin Time - Free Time Activities

Some “Helps”- Processing Talk with your Capernaum Friends

Young Life offers different lengths of camp so the order of the gospel proclamation can vary from 5-7 “talks”. But the typical progression is:
God as Creator
Christ and our need for Him
Sin and our need for Him
Cross/Resurrection
New Life in Christ

Feel free to reach out to Camp Director or Camp Speaker ahead of time for stories used during each club talk and a glimpse at schedule for planning processing time.

You have several opportunities between club talks to personalize the message with your friends- Cabin Time and Free Time. Depending on fatigue, rides etc. it is important to plan the processing time based on individual kids.

We encourage you to pre-think how each person on your trip processes information and bring or plan ways to re-tell or reinforce the talk. It could be a craft or something with their hands that they interact with or verbal and picture reenactment. This seems to work the best when and area assigns a leader 1-2 friends and then that leader thinks through gospel processing on behalf of those 1-2 friends.

Below are some ideas to get you thinking but please think through the lens of those 1-2 Capernaum friends you get to be with at camp.

- Invite recall of the Bible story shared in club by inviting friends in cabin time setting to act it out.

- As their leader listen to talk through the lens of your friends and jot down connectors that you think they will be drawn too.

- As a leadership team come up with a one sentence thought or point from the talk to keep repeating when you lead cabin time or free time. “God made you and knows you well.”

- Put this phrase in prayer form and pray it at bedtime and meals together before the next club.

- Find Bible Story in each friends Bible and bookmark it in a special way.

- Retell Bible Story on ipad or computer with the You Version Bible (kids’ or adult version).

- Bookmark these stories on kids ipad or Bible app of the Bible for when they go home.

- Re-read the Bible story and have 3-6 pictures of things involved in the story on cards in middle of room. Have some friends put them in order as they hear the story read.

- Pinterest has great hands on ideas on how to interact with Bible Stories or concepts. Do you have a leader that could prep some “experiences” based on the Bible stories used prior to coming to camp for kids this could be helpful for?

Some Guiding Principles for Cabin time
  • Make sure that you are listening to the camp message with an ear towards creativity in how you help kids process it.
  • As a leader, you should fully embrace the Holy Spirit and rest in the truth that it is His job to give understanding of the Gospel to our friends.
  • Create a guide for Cabin Time that sets leaders up for success. This guide can provide a recap of the talk, along with some questions and a hands-on activity that will reinforce the gospel.
  • Questions need to be open-ended.
  • Yes or No should not be an acceptable answer.
  • At times, it might help to give Capernaum kids more directive or imperative questions. Rather than pose a question, "Who, what, where, when, why, how," start with a directive such as, "Tell me about, Explain to me, Describe a time, or Talk about."
  • Gear questions toward keeping kids on track so that there are no unnecessary tangents in cabin time.
  • Consider having a number of non-threatening questions ready to start kids talking in cabin time. This way you can avoid the “ditto” answers.
  • During a traditional week of camp, consider an alternative time for cabin time, which will be most conducive to their attention.
  • If you have a cabin time of Capernaum kids and Traditional kids discuss ahead of time the best possible way to do this knowing your kids. What do the 2 groups of kids need to know about each other to move forward in an honest way? Are there times it would be helpful to process differently or take aside? How can you maximize that all kids have a chance to process in their context?
