YL Capernaum Everywhere

During club recently, Katey and her friends were talking about sin and the cross during their club talk. They created this great visual that ended up being so helpful for their friends to understand how sin effects us and how the cross offers us such a beautiful way to live instead! They had 5 boxes- one large box named “SIN”, one large box named “GOD”, one medium box named “ME”, one tiny box named “SIN” and one tiny box named “GOD”. They explained how God created us to live in perfect relationship with Him where we live in Him (put the “ME” box in the large “GOD” box) and where He lives in us (put the tiny “GOD” box in the medium “ME” box). Then, take everything out. They then explained how because of sin (with explanation of sin) it looks like this: put the tiny “SIN” box in the “ME” box and then put the “ME” box in the large “SIN” box. They explained how there is nothing that we can do on our own to get sin out of us and there is nothing we can do on our own to get ourselves out ...

We LOVE this club idea from Robb  Schreiber, YL San Diego North Most of their friends come dressed up for club and the leaders also bring some extra items for their friends who didn't bring a costume. Superhero Shuffle: basically works like a cake walk Printed 27 pics of superheroes that we placed randomly all over the room and while the music played, we walked around until the music stopped everyone moved to a superhero. We printed all 27 names and called 3 out each round like bingo. Example: Superman, Wonder Woman, and Mr Incredible.  We bought superhero figurines from the Dollar Tree and some activity books that were a superhero themed. Each kid would get a prize. After that round we would pull those superheroes off the floor and play again. Each round we call out 3 superheroes, give out prizes, and then pull them from the floor until there were only a few superheroes left and the kids had to choose from the last remaining superheroes on the floor, so we had mult...

Gathering information about our friends so that we can love and serve them is crucial when it comes to club, contact work and camp! We love this idea that Heather Powell and her team created! They gather the specific details on these cards , add a photo of each kid and then print them out as pages. Those pages are then in plastic sleeves inside of a binder and leaders can review or glance at when needed! *To protect her friends, we changed the photos on two examples and left details blank; as well as kept info on two (so you can see what they included) but took out the photos of those friends.

As we continue to go deeper with our friends in Capernaum, we’re seeing such incredible creativity in staff and leaders around the mission! We’re in awe of what you all are doing to consider the greatest and most effective gospel proclamation both verbally and experientially with your friends. Mixer Find the Turkey: Create or print out a picture of a turkey. Send a kid out of the room. Have the rest help you hide it somewhere. Bring the person back in the room. As they walk in the direction the turkey is hidden the audience claps, but if they start to walk away slow the clapping down. (Hot and cold type of game) Game Turkey bowling.   Make sure you have a tarp! Set up pins…if you don’t have actual bowling pins, an easy solution is using soda cans and lets kids have a shot! Pie in the Face trivia: Have 5 kids sitting in chair up front. They pass a whip cream pie like hot potato until the music stops. Whoever is stuck with the pie answers a Thanksgiving themed question. Let’s always deliver the club talk in ways that are relevant and meaningful. Because of the variety of intellectual and sensory differences in the room, we need a simple approach that is also multi-sensory. We need to engage our friends; body, mind, and soul. The Capernaum Club Talk Planner is intended to enable leaders to consider all the necessary factors in planning a message. People learn in more ways than just hearing a speaker verbally proclaim the good news. They enjoy visual images, tactile experiences, and more in order to be immersed in the message. Encourage costumes for this club! Mixer Bingo: Who doesn’t love a fun simple game of bingo?! Dance Thru The Ages Dance Party Game Panty hose bowling: Because we all know grandma needs her panty hose! Place a tennis ball in the open end of panty hose (large size works best). Set up water bottles on the floor. With two players at once see who can knock down the most bottles using only the ball at the end of their hose. Denture talk: Use the mouthpieces from “Watch Ya’ Mouth” and call them dentures. We often get to experience Christmas in July when we go to camp. We get Christmas in December, of course. But how about Christmas all fall long?! Yes, you heard us correctly! Our friends in Little Rock, AR are having Christmas club all semester long! They are focusing on the story of Jesus’ birth this semester, so thought they’d celebrate his birthday all fall long! Set up various games around the room and give the kids time to go to whatever they wanted, when they wanted. Leaders/buddies manned each station. Some station examples are bowling, corn-hole, knocking down pins, sack races, eating donut off string competition, face painting (buddies loved helping with this). Mixer Musical chairs: always a win! Game Finish that line: Bring a few kids up who know music really well. They will take turns (you can eliminate if you wish) finishing well known song lyrics. Play a few seconds of the chorus of a song and the player has to finish it.   Dance moves: Have a list of words such as, run, drive, coffee written on pieces of paper or a slide show. The person playing has to create a dance move to express that word! Super funny game! Shake it off: The key to this song is playing Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off”. This is the classic minute to win it game where you empty out a tissue box, place a few Ping-Pong balls in it and then tie it around your friend’s backside. When the music starts they shake the balls out without using hands. Song: Party in the USA Never Be the Same

Mixer Beach Chair volleyball: (heads up this game involves a lot of supplies...asking your leaders to each bring two beach chairs would work best) This is played the same as volley ball…only everyone is sitting in beach chairs and cant get up! Super funny! Freeze Dance: Because who doesn’t love a little freeze dance to some beach music?! Around the Island Basket Toss: (this could also be a game not a mixer) Cut out a few pieces of paper like islands and number them. Students have to “Island Hop” by hitting each target in order, so once they hit island number one they can move onto number two Games Flip flop through hoop: Player sits in a chair and has three attempts to kick their flip flop from off of their foot trough a hula-hoop being held by a leader (get ready to duck!) Looking for a great visual regarding the incredible reality that Jesus’ death on the cross freed us from sin because He took our sin upon himself?!  Well, look no further because Robb Schreiber saw this, practiced multiple times, found just the right tools needed and videoed for us to learn from! We love that he thought about the specific kids in his club when he considered every detail, down to the color of the water!  There is also a helpful  blog post  about it. You may want or need to change a few details as well, so there are other versions of this on YouTube. You can watch more to see how it’s done in other ways.   This club looks different than a typical layout, but was a fun change. Set up the room to look like a Karaoke lounge. Have black tablecloths and flickering lights on the table. As kids arrive, have them sit at the tables and enjoy a meal.   Pass a signup sheet for Karaoke around with a column for name, song title and artist. NOTE: Only allow each kid one song. If you have a large group you may want to just have them perform the chorus or a set amount of time of the song. Set up a laptop where you can pull the lyrical videos from YouTube, and attach the sound through an aux cord to the speakers. After about 3 songs play a game Called Real or Fake Song Titles At the tables were signs, one side in green said real and on the other in red said fake. When a song title goes up on the screen, have each table decide as a group if it was real or fake. Make a card for each kid so everyone can participate! Mixer Reverse Charades (in one minute): One student comes up (you can do this as many times as you wish) and faces the audience. Words such as surfing, running, brushing your teeth, are projected behind the person and the audience silently acts them out. Keep track of how many they get in a minute. Games Hanky Panky: who can pull the most tissues out of a tissue box with one hand in one minute Paper dragons: each player gets two rolls of streamers. They unravel by making circles with their arms. First to finish both rolls wins, or most when minute is up Oreo Mouth: One minute to get the Oreo from your forehead to your mouth (Great game for buddies to play while audience cheer them on) Cup Stack: Stack cups in a tower and then take down. A similar prayer was led at our YL New Staff Conference and Winter Training.  This has been adapted by Lyn TenBrink for Capernaum. This is a possible way to practice corporate prayer that all of our friends can contribute toward together. Teach Capernaum friends the words or signing to HEAR OUR PRAYER.   Use the prayer below as a template to write a prayer for your Capernaum group based on their needs.   Or  After each prayer request is shared you could possibly have the leader say “Lord in your mercy”   and everyone respond “HEAR OUR PRAYER”.   There could be a hand motion or signal that leader uses to start group with the response.   This is an excellent way to teach prayer alongside everyone participating.   Also, friends can recognize the words they use to share prayer request are actually a prayer.  Capitalized Words indicate GROUP response together …. Mixer Tape shapes: Have a few shapes on the ground shaped like Disney things like the wand, mickey ears, the castle . Play music as everyone dances around the room. When the music stops everyone runs to a shape. Whoever isn’t in a shape it out Each round have a leader take up a piece of tape until there’s only one small shape on the floor. Freeze Frame: Split the room in half. Each group gets about 30 seconds to get in a freeze frame of a Disney movie that’s announced from up front. Most creative wins. Some examples are Tarzan: some kids are monkeys, Tarzan flying or beating on his chest, or Tinkerbelle where the kids are all holding hands pretending to fly. Make sure you say freeze when times up! Games Name that movie: Create a slide show. The first slide will be a zoomed in picture of a famous Disney movie such as Tinkerbelle’s foot. Mark 11:24 It is just incredible to see how God works in our lives when we believe His promises! Back in the beginning of the summer 2017, we prayed and dreamed of a new home for our great ministry, and since October, we have already held weekly projects in the new rooms! The path to this place was full of trials of faith, but now we know for sure that God has a plan to expand the ministry in our city, and He already embodies it! The first stage is over, the move is almost complete and there is some certainty, but there is still much work and open questions ahead, which we also want to entrust to the Lord, our Provident. We still need prayer for the Capernaum Center, as renting a room, arranging it in accordance with the needs of the children and further maintenance requires large monthly finances. Mixer Couple Match-up: You will need stacks of two different colored sticky notes (let’s say one green stack and one pink). You will write couple pairs that your friends know on these. For example, on a green write Minnie Mouse and on pink Mickey Mouse. Place the pink on the backs of your friends and greens on the back of leaders/buddies…no cheating! Don’t let them see who is on their back. Once everyone is ready inform them that they are to find their “couple pair.” They will do this by walking around the room and having friends describe their character WITHOUT saying the name! Once you know who you are you can find your pair. The reason it’s important to have the buddies and leaders be the matches is so they can help their friends out! Once you find your match sit down! Game Heart Target: Place heart shaped paper on the floor, walls, or wherever you want. The person playing the game will be handed a balloon, not tied off!
