Capernaum Talent Show How To

A guest post by Amy Nielson...

Last month, Greater Pasadena Capernaum had a themed “Talent Show” club. It was celebratory, fun and compelling. At first glance, we do a talent show themed club because our Capernaum friends love it! We give extra effort to this club on purpose. Most Capernaum friends light up when given the opportunity and encouragement to take the stage. More so, this club gives leaders the chance to connect with kids and parents in a unique way. Leaders have a pointed opportunity to affirm their friends’ abilities and value as well as encourage them to have courageous fun. This has become an exciting and anticipated tradition. Below is a brief description of our approach as well as practical notes on how we pull it off.

Steps of Preparation
1.    Sign-Ups and Communication

·     Announce at club at least one month ahead of time. Send detailed communication to parents/guardians.
·     Compile sign-ups ahead of time via Google Forms for ease of tracking information. (Example items to request: name, type of talent, group or individual act, desired background song and artist name, if any, contact e-mail)
·     Follow up with Capernaum friend or parent as appropriate to confirm each sign-up.
2.   Secure location. We asked a local church that does not regularly host Capernaum club.
3.   Sell tickets to benefit Campership fundraising. We experimented with a $5 ticket price for all adults to support student summer camp scholarships. Overwhelmingly understanding and positive response to ticket sales and this price point. Capernaum friends get in for free.
4.   Recruit extra help to support serving dinner and selling tickets. Invite YL clubs to get involved.
5.   Envision program start to finish.
·     A leader and Capernaum friend planned a walk-on to MC club and introduce each act.
·     We asked an elder of the church hosting us, as well as a Young Life Committee member, to welcome and open the formalities. We Intentionally created this opportunity for Capernaum families to be exposed to a caring, supportive local church.
·     Finalize line-up of all acts. Print copy for MC, team leader, and person running media.
6.   Invite everyone you know! Give free tickets at no cost to special education teachers and key people.
7.   Notice parents. Before show time, we served dinner to students and leaders. Meanwhile, we invited parents into a separate room to enjoy appetizers, drinks, a space to socialize and watch Capernaum videos (Village of Comfort, camp highlight video, Koren’s Story, Leader Profile: Capernaum)

Day Of Tips

·     Set up clubroom with tables, chairs, decoration, clear stage, and provide instruments if possible.
·     Access to audio and visual equipment is a great bonus, though not necessary. Recruit the help of a technology savvy person to facilitate your playlist and microphone levels. You can also simply run everything through a computer and speakers.

It is a fantastic “come and see” opportunity for local donors, committee, teachers and community friends to experience a bright picture of Capernaum ministry.
