One Question

Back in October, we posted a series of lessons that have been designed for you to do with your high school buddies.  Today, I will begin posting more installments to these so that you can continue to make the most of the time that you have with your high school buddies.

One Question

Intro Question
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Scripture
John 5:1-9
Jesus encounters the man with a disability at the pool in Bethesda.  He asks the man one question, “Do you want to get well?”.  The man cannot answer because of his ‘learned helplessness’ and a sense that something so great, can’t be true.

What do you think the term “learned helplessness” means?

Imagine and discuss what life must have been like for the man at the pool initially…
  • What do you think his daily thoughts would have been like watching people go by?
  • How do you think society brought him to this place?
  • How did people view him?  What kind of assumptions did they make?
  • What do you think his one question would have been?

Again, imagine and discuss what life must have been like for the man after he encountered Jesus…
  • What do you think it felt like to hear Jesus tell the him to “Get up!”?
  • How do you think he felt when he started walking?
  • How do you think people viewed him now?  What kind of assumptions did they make?
  • How do you think life was different for him once people viewed him differently?

Discussion Questions

  • Who can you relate to in the video?
  • What’s your response to the people who say that he would change “nothing”?
  • What’s your response to the man who says that he already changed the one thing?

Response
  • What kind of conversation do you want to have with Jesus about the one thing you wish you could change?
  • What do you think God wants to change about people with disabilities?
  • How can you befriending someone with a disability help people around you see people with disabilities for who they really are?
